Survival Saturday is a round-up of the week’s news and resources for folks who are interested in being prepared.

This Week in the News

Welcome to the Inaugural Edition of Survival Saturday. We’ll talk about Trump’s first day in office, the wave of protests, and his speech. Love him or hate him, it looks like things are going to be a lot different around here. (PS: I made this post as politically neutral as I could and – mostly – just reported facts and quotes.)

President Trump’s Inaugural Address

Unsurprisingly, the left didn’t like Trump’s speech because it focused on “nationalism.”

Let this sink in.

They were upset that someone being sworn in as the President of the United States was focusing on the United States.

Duh.

US President Donald Trump delivered a warlike and hyper-nationalist speech during his inauguration, a break with past inaugural addresses that may set the US on a dangerous path, political analysts say.

“His speech was basically exact same red meat bluster, hyper-partisan, hyper-nationalistic, hyper-populist, hyper-xenophobic speech that he gave from the very beginning of his campaign; it was not an inaugural address,” said Rodney Martin, a former congressional staffer based in Los Angeles…

“It appears that Donald Trump going to approach his administration as always in fight mode and his inaugural address has set that tone; that’s a great disappointment to the country,” he added. (source)

It’s almost like Rodney Martin, quoted above, was listening to a different address. I thought the speech was excellent for one fundamental reason – it didn’t focus on Trump. It focused on us. Here it is if you would like to listen.

What Happened on Day One

After Trump was sworn in, he went right to work. The first presidential documents he signed were:

  • A proclamation for a National Day of Patriotism
  • Formal nominations for his Cabinet members
  • A  document waiving the requirement to be out of active duty for seven years so that retired Marine Gen. James Mattis could become the new Defense Secretary
  • An executive order to begin scaling back Obamacare (YAY!!!!) called “Minimizing The Economic Burden Of The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act Pending Repeal”

Like previous presidents, he ordered a freeze on all pending regulations until his administration has time to review them.

Vice President Pence swore in three people for the following positions:

  • Reince Priebus as Chief of Staff
  • James Mattis as Defense Secretary
  • John Kelly as Homeland Security Secretary

Trump’s staff made immediate changes to the White House website:

Shortly after Trump took the oath of office, the government switched over the White House website from Obama’s to Trump’s…

Policy proposals on Trump’s revamped website ranged from increased cyber warfare capabilities to changing the terms of trade deals with other nations, issues the New York businessman discussed on the campaign trail.

Also notable: There are pages on the website for the release of White House visitor’s logs, ethics pledge waivers, financial disclosures and staff salaries, suggesting that some Obama-era transparency initiatives may remain in place…

…While the top issues on the Obama website were “Civil Rights,” “Climate Change,” “Economy” and “Education,” Trump’s site features different issues with more Trump-themed names: “America First Energy Plan,” “America First Foreign Policy,” “Bringing Back Jobs and Growth” and “Making Our Military Strong Again.”

Various organizations expressed concern that, in wiping the Obama White House website nearly clean, the Trump team eliminated sections devoted to such issues as climate change, gay rights and civil rights in general.

Trump’s staff posted a variety of proposals ranging from an “American First Foreign Policy”  to killing Obama’s climate action plan — plans largely echoing his campaign website. (source)

And of course, there are protests

I fully support the First Amendment right to peaceful protest, and many of the people marching yesterday and today are adhering to those peaceful principles.

Then there are those others.

In the past, it seemed like most of the violence broke out after dark. Not so in Washington DC yesterday.

Protestors Criminals dressed in black with their faces covered smashed the windows of a limo and set it on fire in broad daylight.

They also destroyed the front windows of a Bank of America, a Starbucks, and a McDonalds as patrons huddled under tables to protect themselves from the shattering glass.

Authorities said 217 people were arrested Friday in the protests and demonstrations, which started before dawn and at one point turned into a full-scale riot.

Most of the damage was inflicted by protesters associated with the group DistruptJ20 that had vowed for weeks to “paralyze” the city…six police officers were injured in clashes with protesters, including three with head injuries. One civilian also was injured, and none of the injuries was life threatening…

The group Black Lives Matter forced the Secret Service to close one checkpoint after members, just after dawn, started blocked the gates and chaining themselves to fences…“We are here to let people know this presidency is not legit. It goes against hundreds of years of democracy — black lives matter,” BLM DC’s Tracye Redd told FoxNews.com. (source)

Some Trump supporters reported being physically attacked.

Fox News reported:

A Kansas couple told FoxNews.com that demonstrators attacked them at the checkpoint.

Celeste Sollars, who said she and her husband came to town from Kansas to see the inauguration, said they were spit on and her husband was put in a chokehold by protesters.

“The cops wouldn’t do anything,” she said, crying. “This is not how it was supposed to be — assault is not a First Amendment right.”

Reuters reported:

Not far from the White House, Bob Hrifko, a member of the Bikers for Trump group, said he was struck in the face with an aluminum chair when he tried to intervene in a scuffle involving police and protesters.

“We need more order. This ain’t right,” said Hrifko, who was bleeding from a cut under his eye.

Today (Saturday) hundreds of thousands of women descended on the streets of DC, many in pink “pussyhats.” (Not a typo.)  Protests (thus far peaceful at the time of publication) are occurring across the nation.

But for all the people protesting, keep in mind many people are thrilled that Trump defeated Hillary Clinton and who fully support the new administration.

As for the rest of you who detest Trump?

Welcome to our previous eight years.

If you start out and don’t like it, I’ll give you your money back, no questions asked. We’ve helped hundreds of students get prepped – and NOT ONE of them requested a refund. That has to tell you something.

It breaks down to about $17 a week. About the price of buying a survival book each week that just sits on your bookshelves.
