Here’s What I’m Telling Loved Ones About What to Expect and How to Prepare for It

Editorial Note: Sometimes people ask me, “If I was your family member, what would you advise?” I had begun writing a letter to my loved ones about what is coming and how to prepare for it and I wanted to share it here. If you have family members who you’d like to see get better prepared, please share this with them.  They – like my loved ones – may or may not heed the warnings, but I care enough to try. ~ Daisy

Hey, you guys! It’s me! Your favorite kooky conspiracy theorist relative/friend. Don’t worry. I won’t rub it in that I’m not so crazy anymore. (Much – haha!)

In all seriousness, I wanted to send you a note about what I believe we can expect to see over the next little while and my recommendations on preparing for it. I’m sending you this not to nag or harass you, but because I love you and I want you to be ready if things go sideways.

Because I really think they will.

I’m adding in some links to articles on my website if you want more information about the things I’m suggesting. I won’t push you to do anything other than to read this letter. Please just give me a few minutes of your time and do that – it’s very important to me. After that, you can choose to look more deeply into what I’m saying or you can carry on and hope for the best. Either way, know that you’re loved and that’s why I’ve written this.

So let’s dive into this.

What to Expect

It’s no secret that things in the US are a hot mess right now.

We’ve already had all sorts of riots and fighting (see here and here), and people are planning to protest – perhaps violently – after the election, and it won’t matter who is announced the winner. (I wrote about it here.) You may feel that you are located in a place that is safe from all the hostility but please don’t let down your guard. The danger is reaching further and further outside of the cities. Perhaps it won’t end up on your doorstep, but will it block the road when you’re trying to get home? Will the danger strike while you’re at the store trying to get groceries? It’s vital that you understand this violence is not just a problem happening in Seattle and Portland. It’s spreading, like a cancerous growth, across our nation.

But this is not the only problem.

It may soon become difficult or outrageously expensive to find supplies like food, linens, hygiene supplies, clothing, footwear, medications, and cleaners. There are a lot of reasons for this – to name just a couple – the supply chain is broken and we’re no longer getting regular imports from China. At this point, the “why” doesn’t even matter anymore.

And I know this is starting to sound like a Ginsu knife commercial, but wait, there’s more.

I think we’re going to see another round of lockdowns. And I think it’ll happen fairly soon. Now some of you believe this virus is nothing while others believe that it’s practically the end of the world. Honestly, it doesn’t matter which it is. The lockdowns and the further breakdown of our system are the things that will affect us most direction. My friend Selco, who is from Bosnia, wrote about the breakdown of the system here.

These measures will cause even more economic damage and the country is already in pretty dire straits. We’ll see an uptick in poverty and hunger. Hand in hand with that will obviously be an increase in crime. When people are desperate, they do desperate things.

What I think you should do

You may be thinking, “Why should I be listening to her? She’s always the Voice of Doom.”

I totally get it. These aren’t fun topics. Some of you have known me since I was a goofy, awkward kid and some just as a goofy awkward adult. But this is what I’ve done for a living for the past ten years – I’ve studied disasters and collapses that have occurred all over the world. I’ve taken courses, I’ve researched what works and what doesn’t, I’ve interviewed survivors, and I’ve personally been through a lot.

I just want to share some of the things that I’ve learned over the last decade which may be helpful to you. What you do with the information is up to you.

Stock up as much as you can.

If you have any spare money, I strongly recommend you stock up on the things that I mentioned above: food, linens, hygiene supplies, clothing, footwear, medications, and cleaning supplies. If possible, get the longest-lasting version of these things possible. Remember how empty the shelves got last March? That’s going to happen again. And we may not bounce back when it does.

So when shopping for food, go for big bags of rice, canned goods, dried beans, pasta, sauces, peanut butter, crackers, oatmeal – stuff like that. When shopping for clothing and housewares, get things that are sturdy and will last a long time – forget any delicate dry-clean only stuff. If you can get your cleaning and hygiene supplies in concentrated versions and just add water, it’ll save space. Start going for reusable choices instead of disposable ones, and look into getting ingredients for DIY products. If you’re taking medication, get as many months ahead as you can, even if you have to pay out of pocket for it. You could soon have trouble getting it at all if the issue with imports continues.

And also – grab a few Christmas gifts. You might have difficulty finding what you want closer to the big day.

I know this costs money. Do without treats for a while so you can make it happen. Please trust me on this. Here are some articles if you want more information about this stuff.

Secure your home.

There are two major reasons you’re going to want to do some work on your home security. First, there’s the aftermath of the election. If things get crazy where you are, you’ll want to be ready for it if you aren’t already.

I wrote an article about preparing for civil unrest quickly – you can read it here.

Secondly, above, I mentioned that as the economy gets worse, you can expect crime to increase. And it’s understandable – if your babies were starving, how far would you go to feed them?  But that doesn’t mean you want to be a victim of these criminals. If you’re not doing these things already, please start:

  • Keep your home locked up at all times, both when you’re there and when you’re out.
  • Don’t leave anything in your vehicles.
  • Invest in some security measures like a lock for the gate, video cameras, and a more secure door and door frame.
  • Carry your firearm all the time, even at home. If you don’t use firearms, investigate other possible weapons you might be more comfortable using.

Put back some money.

I know, money, money, money. It seems like all I’m doing is trying to get you to spend money. But if at all possible, you’ll want to free up some money for the months ahead.

Jobs, even the ones that seem secure today, could be lost. Everything will very likely start costing a lot more. You could find yourself in a bad position financially. Do not spend money frivolously right now, please. You’re very likely to regret it if you do.

Do what you can to put back some money that is easily liquid – so cash or precious metals.  If you need to sell some stuff to raise these funds, do so. An emergency fund has never been more important than it’s about to be – and I’m HUGE on emergency funds. Here’s more information about rainy day money.

Have a back-up plan.

All the stuff above is Plan A. It’s stuff you can do to combat the things that I suspect could happen soon. But if you can’t manage to pull Plan A together, or you go through all your supplies and money, or something else bad happens, consider Plans B-Z. You don’t necessarily need to take action on these things, but consider the following questions and think about back-up plans.

  • What would you do if you could no longer pay your rent or mortgage?
  • What if you ran out of food and couldn’t get what you needed (either because of a lack of money or a lack of available supplies)?
  • With whom could you band together if things got really bad? Are there neighbors you trust? Nearby friends or family members?
  • What would you do if it became too dangerous to stay where you live right now? What if it was for a couple of days? What if it was for a couple of weeks? What if it was for longer?
  • If you couldn’t get the medication you take regularly, what are some back-up options? Are there other meds that would work in the same way? Are there natural options?
  • What would you do if you lost your job? Are there any side gigs you could start? Do you have your resume up to date? What is the employment situation in your industry right now?

I don’t bring these things up to scare you. I just know that for me, I handle things a lot better if I’ve seriously considered the possibility before. Sometimes fast decisions are required and if you’ve already done the research and the mulling over, you can make those choices quickly.

Why I’m telling you this

I know this note may seem like it’s out of the blue, but with my finger on the pulse of all this stuff, I have been feeling an increased urgency to be prepared for the future. I don’t have a crystal ball and things could muddle along as they have been for a long time. But my educated guess is that they will not and that we are on a slippery slide right now.

Please, please, consider what I’ve written carefully and don’t just dismiss it because it sounds “crazy” or “paranoid.” If you have ANY questions, please let me know and I’ll do my best to help.

I’m writing this because I love you and I want you to be safe, healthy, nourished, and comfortable. This is my way of taking care of the people I care about the most. If I didn’t at least try to warn you, I couldn’t live with myself if these things come to pass and you suffer because of it.

But all I can do is sound the alarm and point you in the right direction. The rest is up to you.

Love,

Daisy

  • yup, too many have too much to lose with the results on Nov. 3rd. for the SHTF not to happen.

Prepare fur ugly as your Mother-in-law!

  • Great advice . We can only hope and pray that our friends and family take heed. My personal experience is there are a lot of people that are.

    • There are ALOT of people who will be, and probably an equal percentage that will not be and some that have no clue b/c they live day to day and don’t give any thoughts to their future, just come and go and live life as it comes. Their minds are pre-occupied on other things that they think are more important. Just think about wearing masks. Most people do (my guess 80-85%) wear something over their face in public, but what about all those who don’t. They don’t think it will affect them, they don’t believe it’s real, they don’t follow advice of those who know more than they do, or they are just plain ignorant or maybe they just don’t care one way or the other. They might just be to STUBBORN and want to do everything their own way regardless of the consequences.

SO we have those that do in both cases…Some PREPARE and WEAR MASKS, consequently others DO NOT PREPARE and NEVER BOTHER WITH A MASK. SO what can you do? Even Walmart as stupid as it is, has a sign on their door, MASKS REQUIRED, but yet they don’t enforce their own rules, so WHY have up this big sign if you don’t have to wear a mask inside the store? Does that make any sense. They say it’s impossible to force people or make them wear them. If that is the case, WHY the sign in the first place. How about a sign that say, WALMART RECOMMENDS THAT YOU WEAR A FACE COVERING AT ALL TIMES DUE TO CORONA-VIRUS, PROTECT OUR EMPLOYEES AND PROTECT YOURSELF AS WELL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION. “WALMART INC.”…
We can lead a horse to water, but we can’t make it drink. Be safe, not sorry, be alert, wise, aware and prepared!!!

      • I believe the stores put the signs up to comply with the orders given for them to remain open. Normally, they don’t have the right to force people to wear masks. The masks don’t protect people from respitory viruses. So they are completely pointless to be wearing in the first place. People who wear a mask for hours are doing more harm to themselves then the .054% fatality rate that the virus has. And that’s for people 70 and older. I believe its .003% for people between 20 and 50.

        • A german doctor came out and said the mask kills brain cells and those cells don’t come back. There are lots of articles on why the mask don’t work. It is about control and not safety. When searching don’t use google, they are censoring

        • First of all, your statistics are off by a couple of orders of magnitude. Second, you apparently are paying no attention at all to the long-term side effects of having had this illness, even occurring in people who show no symptoms during the infection. And most egregiously of all, “…masks don’t protect people from respiratory viruses…”? And the source of this wisdom is… let me guess… you have a contact who lives on Mars, and she has done extensive, long-term testing, and assures you that even though masks might appear to filter respiration, in fact that is a hoax, and we actually breathe (and thus pass on the infection) through our skin.

          • Ultrasceptic, you sound like a real ass. If you don’t like the advice then please move on. Daiseys advice is spot on and I’m very grateful for her insights. It’s time for you to go somewhere else and irritate a different group of people. We don’t have the time or the patience for your sarcasm. Bye!

          • Just a note that my sister who works in a hospital got COVID as well as everyone in her unit. She recovered and my 76 year old mother lives with her COVID free. She must wear a mask, but that didn’t stop everyone at the hospital from getting it.
I had 6,500 people rent vacation homes from us all summer long. We wore no masks, gloves, nothing and they were from every hot spot in Texas: Houston, Corpus Christi & San Antonio mostly. We went into homes sometimes minutes after they left to clean the houses, toilets, countertops, pull off the bed linens, etc. Not one of us got sick. We tested negative twice. So please don’t lose perspective as each person must decide the level of risk they’re willing to take. We took lots of risks this summer, but the financial reward was we made the most money in the history of our company.

          • There are NO RCTs that have ever proved the efficacy of masks. Over 40 done.
Even CDC data shows 85% of people that have gotten Covid “always, or almost always” wear a mask.

            NO to masks.

            • Please provide a specific link to any real science site that says masks do not work. So called surgeon’s are questionable, but real US N95 do work as numerous studies find.

          • “’…masks don’t protect people from respiratory viruses…’?”

they don’t. as someone else said, a mask holds back viruses about as well as a chain link fence holds back mosquitos.

        • I so disagree with you Wandakate! A CDC report of people who became ill with the virus showed that 70.6% always wore a mask in the 14 days before they got sick, further calling into question the effectiveness of masks for preventing the virus.

      • Good morning Wandakate, while I appreciate your passion concerning your position on wearing a mask, I respectfully disagree and I refuse to wear a mask – there are too many studies out there for anyone to review to see that just as many – if not MOST – doctors an health care professionals will show that wearing a mask is equal to trying to stop a BB with a chain-link fence. Studies have also shown that 80% + of those who: “wear their masks ‘religiously’ come down with lung infections because over time, they actually end up trapping the very contaminants into their mask that the body is attempting to get rid of – the contaminants become concentrated over a short period of time – it then breaks loose from the webbing – and then is breathed back into the lungs.
Here is just one on many many links I can refer you to to: https://iconnectfx.com/view/b87e190f-b615-eb11-9979-00505682f257
I also refuse to wear a mask for Biblical reasons. I see this as a form of herd conditioning and prepping the masses to receive the “vaccine”. I won’t go into any detail here – the link above will explain it all. Dr. Carrie Madej is just one of many that does an outstanding job covering everything.
Good luck with your life’s decisions.

      • “they don’t believe it’s real”

no, we don’t. and the facts bear us out.

“WHY have up this big sign”

liability. lawyers are standing by, waiting for their chance to undermine normal business activities while making walmart and from some random peon pay them hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal “fees” for the privilege of being sued.

  • DAISY, YOU’RE NOT “CRAZY” YOU’RE PRETTY SMART !!! Remember better SAFE than SORRY!!!
Good advice, actually excellent advice, thanks! I hope those not prepared will heed the message and do what they need to do rather than be sorry they procrastinated and did nothing. They’ll be sorry for not being smart and on the ball.
Take care and stay safe, it’s gonna be a bumpy road ahead…

  • I have friend who must feels that everything will work out and be OK. I tell her to stock up on supplies and I really feel that she must think I am some sort of conspiracy nut. Tried to warn her that it may be too dangerous to go to the store to “get that one last item.”
I was definitely late to the prepping scene. Oh, I would stock up on some items in case I got snowed in for a couple of days. But, like everyone else, I was used to just getting in the car and driving to a store if I needed something.
Nowadays my spare bedroom looks like a warehouse…and I am OK with that…

    • “I have friend who must feels that everything will work out”

even after seeing the store shelves half-empty during this cov19 hype? wow, she’s tough.

  • Thank you Daisy,

I’m sending the link to this article to many friends and loved ones. “A prophet has no honor in their old home” is an old adage, but it’s based in truth and while they may not listen to me I hope they will listen to you.

Thanks again for succinctly voicing what we all feel.

  • I like your letter it hits the mid-level perfectly, outlining what you think will happen and what to do.

My sister has been a nay-sayer about food storage until she came to visit when my daughter got married. We use our food storage as part of our meal planning and she saw what I have in food storage and she went home and a week later have 5 meals in storage and 2 or 3 of each meal. Plus she has food in her freezer and says if they have to, they can go 2 or 3 weeks without going to the grocery store.

I think we are as ready as we can be for whatever chaos happens after the election. Due to the number of mail in ballots that cannot be counted until election day, I am worried that we may not know the results until the following day. Hopefully the election commision in all the counties in the country are ready for the increase in mail in ballots and I’m wrong about not all of them being counted on election day.

When we were stocking up on food, hubby complained a little and I point out that if we didn’t need the extra food storage that our grocery bill will be very tiny for a while.

  • I don’t know how many times I have heard family say if SHTF they plan to come out to us. I don’t have room for anyone. If my house ever gets finished, it is only a one bedroom. Right now I sleep in the kitchen. I did not build my food storage on more than just two people. None of my family has prepared, none has come out to help us and we are in our 60’s. A lot of our money goes to building material, alternative supplements and herbs. My husband has MMN which is the first cousin to ALS. Jack, a friend from town, said that if any of his or his wife kids show up, he would not take them in. I thought he was being harsh, but they are in their 80s. I now understand that I am not the buffer for those who choose to go on vacations and buy stylish cloths rather than prepare. I can’t afford them. If SHTF then the cities will be locked down and I doubt anyone will make it the several hundred miles to get to me.

  • I love the advice, but feel really under prepared and can only do a limited amount of prep. Spending money is ok if you have it, and I don’t have enough to feel like we have prepped enough. And the more I read the more it mounts up on what to have/ do/ get. We are fortunate enough to make ends meet, but don’t have much extra at all. I will stop complaining and get on with it!!! Just getting more and more stressed. Appreciate the advice though.

    • Thank you for your comment, Issy. I’ll work on an article for people in your situation for tomorrow or the next day. You’re absolutely not alone – this last lockdown has drained the bank accounts and supplies of plenty of experienced preppers too. I appreciate the inspiration and hope my next piece is more helpful.

    • Being prepared is just as much mindset as how much stuff you have.
Look around your house and see the things you DO have, versus the things you don’t.
Gain free knowledge every chance you get.
Think of what you would do right now.
Lets take water for instance. Do you have a way to put back water from the tap? (e.g. 2 liter bottles, etc.) Do you have a way to boil water to make it potable? Do you have the knowledge as to different methods of storing and purifying water?
Of the three things mentioned, gaining and having the knowledge is pretty much free Read everything free about that subject and if you can print it off for free, do that too.
You are now one step further into prepping than most of your neighbours.
Look at the Red Cross, FEMA, and other sites and start with enough stocks for 72 hours.
Then build it up one day at at time until you reach 14 days, then 30 days, then 90 days, then a year.
      Slow steady pace works too.
Don’t become ensnared in the “oh my god I don’t have enough time or money for this'” trap.
Look at everything around you and see what things can help you in your preparedness journey.
Prioritize what funds you DO wish to put towards preparedness.
Even just two dollars a day can go a long way if you shop carefully and use your new found knowledge to make purchases that will help you.
Lets say you like ramen noodles. While maybe not the best thing nutrition wise, some places have them at a fairly cheap price for certain brands. Two dollars might buy anywhere from two packages to six or eight packages. By grabbing those noodles you’ve now got two to eight meals simply by adding boiling water.
      Don’t get stressed.
Take the time to change your mindset and then pursue your new life goal given what resources you currently have.
Prioritize those items YOU think you need most.
Diversify your income streams and create more if that is a goal.
You already taken the biggest step in the preparedness journey— you’ve acknowledged a mindset towards being prepared and now you are taking concrete steps to do the best you can with the resources you have.
Preparedness is a life journey, not a sprint.

  • Lora thanks for speaking up and speaking truth .. And I might add …not quite sure what wearing a mask has to do with this article?

  • I think it’s spot on. I’ve had the same problem in the past with family. They lost with me for wasting money . How can I waste money on food getting it on specials that I won’t likely see again is beyond me. It all got pretty nasty but I explained with special needs kiddos I don’t always have the option to go out to the store and really pushed the point to my dad as he cares for my terminal I’ll mom he realised he couldn’t always go out either so I got him on board which caused a strain on their marriage as I was interfering . She calls it their spare room supermarket. She puts him down and makes fun of it telling everyone. No clue. Yes I’m the crazy one in my family trying to stay one step ahead and prepare and train . Personally been through some tough times taught me if I didn’t I would be doing a disservice to myself and my children. I admire you so much as I can finally relate to a mum prepper who has seen tough times too. Wishing you guys all safety from across the ocean xxx

  • What would you do if the grid went down…a big one I didn’t see mentioned. No heat calls for heavy sleeping bags in most of this country this time of year.

  • Kathleen J you make me feel normal!!!! Thank you. Although I have been a prepper for years, since COVID, my guest room and some other rooms look like a warehouse also. Between buying and preparing, there has been little time for organizing. My greatest fear is someone will have to come into my home if I were to become incapacitated BEFORE I can get stuff organized. This has been a buying frenzy period even for the most prepared of us I believe.

Daisy, thanks for caring enough about your fellow man to take the time to give us these final updates and warnings. I pray we all make it to the other side of this tunnel in decent shape spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically.

  • “We’ve already had all sorts of riots and fighting (see here and here), and people are planning to protest – perhaps violently – after the election, and it won’t matter who is announced the winner.”

Here is a video clip of what Kamala Harris said in regards to the PROTESTS (not riots) before and after the election. Listen to the end. Notice haw she smiles and glows as she talks about the protests.

    https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/kamala-harris-protests/

  • Lots of good comments.

I would like to make a couple of points not related so much to preparing but more to do with everyday worries.

There is way too much angst concerning the votes being tallied on election day. How did they ever hold elections with paper ballots that all needed counting, before the age of electronics came to be? They counted them by hand and it took longer than one day to count and gather the tallies together. In fact, the states have 35 days to certify their votes. Some politicians are trying to cause trouble because they fear losing, is all.

Another point about mask wearing. I don’t really care who wears a mask in public or not, but I follow the rules at the doctors or in a store. Yes, stores can force you to wear a mask or make you leave the premises. It’s called private property rights and they are the bedrock of our republic. I expect people to follow my rules on my property and you should follow the rules on another’s property. As soon as you step over their property line, your rights to do as you please end.

    regards

  • Just because your paranoid doesn’t mean no one is out to get you. Prep and be ready, then breathe a sigh of relief when it doesn’t happen.

  • I’m never “lock down” nor do I wear a diaper across my face. So, what are they going to do about it? Basically nothing because they don’t have the resources to do anything about it. Its all the “Emperor has no clothes” scenario. Make threats and all the sheep will comply. They will, but we are not all sheep. They relay on the sheeple to enforce their edicts upon the sheeple disobeying.

“Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty”

  • Some of the comments on here regarding masks are interesting. I think most are completely missing the point of wearing a mask. It’s not to protect the wearer it’s to protect everyone else around the wearer.

From the perspective of an outsider (New Zealander), the mask debate in the US embodies how divided the country is. Not whether one person is right or wrong, just how vitriolic the arguments become. I wish people could actually listen openly to each other and then respond civilly.

I used to think that the biggest threats to the USA were external, terrorists based in the middle east. Potentially China or Russia.

But it’s pretty clear the biggest threat the USA faces today is itself – Whether that be the government (state & federal) or the people.

If you don’t learn to get along you’ll have a situation like that India faced at the end of colonial rule by the British. The split into Hindu India and Islamic Pakistan. You’ll have to divide the country in two and everyone will have to move to the half that suits their ideology.

If the USA splits on a state by state basis the whole place is going to be a dog’s breakfast.

The best thing everyone can do is delete your Facebook & Twitter accounts. Your blood pressure and intelligence will thank you for it.

Good luck everyone. And thanks to Daisy & Selco for continuing to put out great content. I’ve been a keen follower for a few years and learnt lots in the process.

    Kia Kaha.

P.S. I’m not trying to offend anyone, just trying to add some perspective. To outsiders, it’s like watching a slow trainwreck in a fishbowl. Those in the fishbowl can’t see the forest for the trees. Far too busy hating on each other to do anything useful.

    • Well said Ross – no offense taken. I’m very blessed that my family and I live in a “fly over” state. We live in an overgrown farm town called Topeka Ks.
Most of the people I know here in Topeka see everything for what it is – government controlled chaos.
If written history is to be our guide, it would appear that the USA is pretty much at its end, and every world power throughout history has almost always came to its end because of “internal – society – breakdown”. Outside forces (foreign countries) simply came in to clean up the mess and take over. The good thing is – there’s always survivors! We plan on being among them.
It’ll be fun for the whole family! It’s all in the attitude – do what you can – relax – and then leave everything else in the hands of God and His Son Yahshua (Jesus).
For many of those here on this site – I know what it’s like to have family members who won’t prepare. Don’t stress. You’ve done what you can.
I recently reminded one fellow “believer” not long ago who was NOT preparing at all (and he has four very young children) about the Bible passage: 1 Timothy 5:8 “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

On a different note: Daisy, do you think it would be a good idea to re-post the “Rules for Combat”?
