Survival Saturday is a round-up of the week’s news and resources for folks who are interested in being prepared.
This Week in the News
This week on Survival Saturday, we’ll track an alarming series of stories that should make you question if you are actually prepared for what is coming. Don’t disregard the stories because many of them come from across the globe -it’s important to keep our eyes on the world so that we can work smarter to keep ourselves prepared and safe.
They’re Gearing Up for Something in Europe
I have the feeling all hell is about to break loose in Europe. Here are some headlines from stories on my websites over the past few days:
A Disturbing Series of Events: Governments Around the World Seem to Be Preparing for War
Why Is the German Government Telling People to Stockpile Food, Water, and Cash?
Now the Czech Government Is Warning Citizens To Stockpile Food
Another Warning Sign? Some EU Members Are Calling for the Formation of a European Army
Now, it’s entirely possible, as many people over in the Facebook discussion have suggested, that this is in response to the migrant crisis. Over the past year, more than 1 million refugees from conflict-torn areas arrived in Europe, bringing with them cultural differences and behaviors that are tearing the continent apart.
Many of the asylum seekers have flatly refused to assimilate into European culture, and this has led those of a more suspicious nature (*cough*) to believe that this flood of immigration is really just a modern-day Trojan horse. It is undeniable that radical Islamic terror attacks and crimes against women have increased since the massive arrival.
What do you think is the reason for the unease in Europe? Share your opinion in the comments below.
North Korea is Being Cantankerous
At the same time, things are heating up in North Korea. The UN has condemned the country’s “test-firing” of a ballistic submarine missile toward Japan earlier in the month, the fourth “test” in the past two months. As well, the North Korean Army has threatened US troops with the “nuclear hammer of justice” (I swear I didn’t make that up).
North Korea has threatened to fire at lighting equipment being used by the US and South Korean militaries at a village inside the Demilitarized Zone.
An official statement by the North’s Korean People’s Army accuses US and South Korean troops of initiating “deliberate provocations” by targeting North Korean posts with the lights. (Read more)
Life in North Korea is tenuous at best. (This documentary about it is free on Prime – we found it very interesting.) With that delusional little dictator calling the shots, literally anything could happen there.
Then There’s Russia, Syria, and the US (and Maybe Even China)
As if there aren’t enough tensions, President Obama seems to be poking the bear with regard to Russia and Syria.
Just a couple of days ago Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis claimed that US jets attempted to intercept Syrian planes to protect the American advisers operating illegally with Kurdish forces in Syria after Syrian government jets bombed areas of Hasakah when Kurdish police began an aggression against the National Defense Force.
When asked about Russia (they are in Syria by invitation of the legally and internationally recognized government) another advisor, Peter Cook stated:
“If they threaten US forces, we always have the right to defend our forces,”
Could it be that unannounced military exercises ordered by Vladimir Putin are a response to that statement?
According to the country’s defense ministry, the exercises were to check the readiness of Russian troops.
Army units in the south and west, the airforce and the northern fleet of the Russian navy are on high alert. Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said that the exercises were instigated on the direct orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Vladimir Putin.
“Troops in the Southern Military District, some units of the Western and Central Military Districts, as well as the Northern Fleet, the Air Force and the Airborne Troops, are to be put on full alert.”
The exercises will finish on August 31, and are aimed at making sure the Russian armed forces can “defend Russia’s interests amid emerging security threats” Shoigu said
Those threats could be assumed to be an increased number of NATO forces in Eastern Europe including Russia’s western border and in the southwest where there is ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. It seems strange that these exercises come just hours after the Pentagon confirmed they would shoot down Russian jets that fly over positions occupied by American advisors and US forces on the ground in Syria.
Although not widely publicized, two weeks ago China joined Russia in supporting the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad – that’s quite some alliance.
So far the United States has made no comment on the uptick in Russian military activity.
Meanwhile in the US…
It seems like countries around the world are taking steps to ensure that their citizens are self-reliant, but here in US that is frowned on. After a massive flood hit Southern Louisiana, we were mystified as to why there was so little coverage of the disaster. Just weeks before, the area had been overflowing with reports eager to tell everyone about the racism that led to Alton Sterling being shot, then 3 cops shot in retaliation for that. When a flood destroyed thousands of homes, killed 13 people, and damaged countless other homes, it just didn’t measure up to the race baiting story and got little coverage.
The lack of coverage could be even more insidious than that, though. Louisianans channeled the old-fashioned America, where no one waited around for the government to save them. They rolled up their sleeves and got to work, rescuing stranded people and beginning the process of rebuilding.
But then…wait…nope.
Apparently in America, you aren’t supposed to do any of that without a permit. The government got involved and demanded that residents immediately stop surviving without permission. You can read more about that here.

This Week in Preparedness…
This week, I want to talk about something a little different than the usual list of articles. I want to talk to you about really, truly getting prepared. If the recent headlines haven’t made you feel uneasy, then you haven’t been paying attention. But, I’m pretty sure most of the folks that come here actually do pay attention. You know you should be increasing your preparedness.
I want to invite you to participate in a unique program with me and Lisa Bedford (aka the Survival Mom.) We’re just about to start our second session of the 10-week prepping intensive. This is a hands-on program with opportunities to network with other preppers who are on the same path, a chance to attend webinars and ask questions of the bloggers whose websites you read all the time as well as experts in fields like herbalism, emergency medicine, food preservation, home security, and personal defense. You can hear from people like FerFal (who survived the collapse of Argentina) and Selco (who survived the occupation of Bosnia.)
When we asked our Prepping Intensive students for feedback during the last week of class, one woman’s response stunned me:
“I had thought about prepping for some time, but I did not know where to start. This class has changed my life.” ~Marilyn
Changed her life? Wow. I had to think about that for a minute and then realized how actively prepping has changed my life, too. When another wildfire sprung up not too far from our home this year, we weren’t panicked. We knew exactly what we needed to do to get out fast. We were ready to be out the door with our pets and most prized possessions in a matter of minutes.
Marilyn’s story isn’t unique. She knew about prepping, had read what to do, but hadn’t taken many steps to actually PREP! How many of us are just like that?? This is an investment that could one day save your life. This could be the most important class you ever take.<

I really hope to see you there. Registration is already more than double our numbers from last June with our first Prepping Intensive. We do have a limit on how many students we can have, because our webinar service “seats” only a small number of people.<
Feel free to post any questions here in the comments section!

Hello from Europe. The “socialist utopia” has indeed failed, judging by the excellent capitalist based lifestyle of most Europeans.
Europe is always preparing for war. This is Europe, they have had no problem waging wars over a few square miles of land in the past. As a matter of fact the point of a military force is to prepare for war. So yes, Europe will be preparing for war all the time.
“Many asylum seekers have flat out refused assimilation”. Please define many. What percentage? I would hardly think that an asylum seeker who walked for days, or paid a lot of money to be stuffed in a shady toy boat with a motor from a lawnmower, would get to the place of they seeked asylum in, then say “nope, I hate living in France, i will not learn French, their rap music sucks”. Having to put your life and your family’s lives in danger and drop all of your possessions and lifestyle from home to get somewhere is very self selective for people who want to live in a new country with their assorted silly customs. I’m sure that there are some that refuse to assimilate, after all, in the US there are people who also refuse to assimilate to the general population, they can be Amish, hippies, religious, preppers, houseboaters, gypsies. A common denominator for those who do not assimilate is that they just want to be left alone, hardly a reason for distrust.
Re: 10 Week Prepping Intensive
This is an excellent course! No matter what stage of preparedness you are at, you will learn.
Excellent speakers, resources, printables, plus the fellowship and sharing with a (closed) Facebook group.
If you have wanted to get more prepared, this will guide you in the right direction.
Thank you for your support! I’m very glad that you enjoyed the course. 🙂
Miss Luther, in answer to the question, “Are you really prepared for what’s coming?” – I’ve two things all should consider. First, the obvious, “what’s coming” embraces so many vectors that that alone should give anyone pause in answering the question. Second, the vagaries of fate, life, Murphy’s Law for goodness sake!… dictates that regardless of any and all experiences one may have had to date, no one is ready in actuality for a crisis. Why? Because either a person wants such a terrible event as can be chosen from the plethora of possibilities to happen; thus, placing that same individual in a category of irrationality. For what human being wants such negatives to occur and can be considered sane? Or…. we, the majority of people I hope, do not want a catastrophic event to occur and take what steps we can to prepare for —– anything and everything. Rather like we all should normally merely due to life’s random throws of the dice.
So? My biggest fear are those who state they are prepared and totally believe their own self-aggrandizement, neglecting the deep truth that destiny awaits those who find a path through all adversity to their own personal ends. What those will be, will be as myriad as the stars in the sky.
As for me – no, I am not ready and am lucky enough to realize it. But, I plan on doing all I can to survive in an honorable fashion.
Feels like powder kegs are set all over the place. As though each situation is being pushed and pushed. My fear is that when the first big one goes off, the others will quickly follow. If it was just one event … look at JFK getting killed. Bad and sad but the country didn’t disintegrate, the world didn’t flip out. But what we have now … imagine if some huge event happened right now : California earthquake, 911 truth exposed, N Korea attack, US shoots down a Soviet plane, Hillary ‘accident’ … the whole country, the whole world ! would just flip out. What worries me is that we are not headed towards an isolated incident that can be dealt with rationally, however hard it is to do, but instead towards a cascade of events, with synergystic effect.
My whole life revolves around prepping right now. It’s my big hobby. I’m not worried – I actually enjoy it. You can never be fully prepared, but that’s no reason to balk at doing what you can. All the money you spend is an investment in your future. Better than money in the bank.
