The first week of our Northern adventure has a little less bang for the buck in that we are both sick.  As dogs. As in didn’t get off the couches for daysssss

Darn flu!

Yesterday I felt better so I got some boxes unpacked and got at least one end of the living room together. I can’t feel at home until there are pictures on the wall, so despite the fact that there is chaos elsewhere in the room, one end of it looks nice. It’s just how my crazy mind works. I’m happy because I’ve always wanted a purple living room.

On one side of the stove we have our woodpile.
And on the other we have our comfy reading chair and some ugly boxes.  I hope to replace the ugly boxes with attractive boxes soon but they hold necessary fire supplies – kindling and paper.
I’ve learned a few interesting things.
#1 ~ First off, building a fire is pretty easy.  Keeping a fire burning is not so easy – we’re still working on that!

#2 ~ All those moving boxes I broke down and put in my truck came right back out when I realized that cardboard works to get a fire going much in the same way as newspaper, especially when you peel the layers of corrugated cardboard!

#3 ~  Many household things I once threw away or recycled are beneficial near the fireplace/woodstove.  Non-glossy packaging for food (like some cereal boxes) work beautifully.  So do toilet paper rolls.  And toilet paper rolls filled with shredded scrap paper from bills and junk mail – even better!!!  I don’t have a dryer yet but apparently dryer lint is quite the little firestarter too!

#4 ~  Wood has to be stacked whether you’re sick or not!

Living in the boonies is a huge change!  In the city you can generally “let things slide” when you’re sick. When your warmth depends on doing what needs to be done, WHEN it needs to be done, you just suck it up and deal with it!
