What do you get when you put two of the most prominent minds in survival today online together? You get an hour and a half of GOLD.
You all know Selco. He contributes regularly to this website and is the best-selling author of two book that you can find here and here. And if you’ve been around the preparedness niche very long, you’ll also know Fernando Aguirre, also known as FerFAL. A little background on FerFAL – he survived the brutal socio-economic collapse of Argentina back in the early 2000s. He eventually left Argentina with his family in 2011. His books can be found here, here, and here and this is his very popular YouTube channel.
Both of these men have survived the worst-case scenarios for which we all prep. Now we have the chance to listen in on a conversation between the two of them in the video below.

People who have actually been through the SHTF that we all plan for have very different perspectives about not only the SHTF but also everyday life.

Although some of their points are good, they show how foreign and uninformed they really are.
They talk about people thinking some thing would not happen where they are, and link it to American Exceptionalism , when in fact it is a human trait called cognitive dissonance.
They also say that owning the Guns does not make a difference, lots of countries have guns.
In that point they are right, but American gun culture is more than just about having guns.
There is, for the most part in America; an empowering, independence and a responsibility that goes with having guns. Which is not found in other countries, that just have guns.
This culture is part of a big difference that outsiders, foreigners, etc, do not understand.
Another point they make is how different people (as in evil) can turn out be, when SHTF.
However again this does not apply as much in America.
The reason is Christianity, in the Mid west, (the Bible belt), you can be assured that people will help each other a lot more, than in say NY. Yet after 9/11, even NY had a whole lot more community and helpfulness than most countries, show after having a Disaster.
Yet it is so common to America and American thinking, that it will be far better, ( less evil), than other countries that are less Christian. Again this is a uniquely American phenomena.
Just the Military concept of “not leaving a Soldier behind” and the lengths we will go to to follow that up, is another part of American Culture. It is ingrained in us to stick together and help one another.
Another Uniquely American sentiment is that of Hope and a positive outlook. If you study the rest of the world , you will find they are mostly fatalists and hopeless. They quickly resign them selves to the situation at hand, rather than to struggle against it.
The idea of Resistance and fighting to overcome obstacles is another part of American culture.
Although these are just a few of the difference between Americans and the rest of the world, (call it American exceptionalism, if you like), but there are many more.
They set us apart from the rest of the World by a wide margin. Most of the world recognizes these differences; they try to make light of them, but usually end up trying to imitate them, while at least somewhat hating us for being that way.
Their is one thing I have learned in traveling outside the US. That for the most part US citizens in other countries tend to retain US customs and manors. While if foreigners come here, they tend to start acting like us. When they go home their fellow country men often notice the difference and chide them for it.
So there is a whole lot more to this , than what many would like to let on.
So yes, we have a lot of unique differences than those our fellow Preppers in Europe or elsewhere.
Which is why we have to be careful how we take in their info, as it will only partly apply in America, in a SHTF scenario.

Yes, it will be much worse. There is no unity in America, a country that has abandoned all ethics and morality.
It is a fractured and dying empire that promotes conflict all over the globe.
There will be karma to pay for destroying Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Ukraine, Libya, and many others.
The founding fathers had vision that has been squandered by greed and stupidity. They never intended to have a democracy, because they understood that democracy is the death of a nation.
And now the Empire is about to go belly up, and when it does, the two sides that hate each other will go to war.
The guns and anger are everywhere, just waiting for the spark.
The sad part is that there is no where to run, and we Americans must stand and embrace our karmic fate.
When things get scarce humans revert to tribe, and tribes go to war.
Yes, many things are tribal.
However, those countries with a strong moral/ethical/religious foundation will fare better.
Look to Russia, and Eastern Europe for this type of example.
Japan will fare better as well. When tsunami’s happen or a radiation spill like Fukushima, the people pull together. It is easy for them because there is NO diversity.
In the West it will be chaos on steroids. Morals and ethics have been thrown away, and the country is evenly divided between two groups that absolutely hate each other and are heavily armed.

Its always good to compare the similarities between the different SHTF situations.
What were the same thoughts and ideas before, during and after.
What were the commonly needed items?
As to the US, I don’t think that it will be better or worse than either experience that Selco and FerFAL went through, just different.
In my 4th decade of this and what I keep seeing is history repeating itself.
Are we going to suffer the same as Bosnia or Venezuela or Argentina? Maybe, maybe not. But we are likely to see ourselves going down the same path that South Africa and Rhodesia did.
Unlikely for the same reasons but socio-politically, almost without a doubt.
What can we do? In any case we can just be prepared regardless of the reasons.

I have been aware of Selco’s writings for awhile, so, yea it was good, great, to hear him speak. Having the opportunity to attend one of his classes, along with FerFAL and Toby, would be worth its proverbial weight in Gold. (The pre-SHTF value of the precious metal.)

Gotta say, Selco, being a regular guy who survived some extraordinary events, came across as being very grounded in reality. Something we all should try to emulate.

Listening to FerFAL it occured to me something that isn’t bought up much in survival blogs as much as it should.
When the SHTF or the levy breaks, if you survive, there is no way you can imagine where you’re wind up at and in what condition, physically, mentally, spiritually or otherwise. Sort of being hit by a large tidal wave and being carried along. You might be alone in some place half way around the world or fall in with another group if you’re lucky. Might as well be on the dark side of moon.
There’s a very good chance you’ll be separated from your family or group. Then what?
Without you, will your family know to survive, regroup or choose another leader?
It’s likely the place you once called home will not exist. On Vikingpreparedness, Pastor Joe Fox talked about people trying to reclaim our Founding Fathers dream of a Republic. But as history illustrates Empires last two hundred fifty years or so. When the SHTF there is no turning back to something that will not exist anymore. Strange thought, the country you knew is no more. It’s real and happens.
Can you wrap your mind around that idea?
Interesting interview between FerFAL and Selco as both had different experiences in that one later migrated while the other was confined to one place due to being in a siege but both could share their experiences of the SHTF.
