Feminist Terry McMillan Empowers Women by Telling Those Who Disagree with Her to “bake more cookies”

We should all be thankful that we have feminists out there whose sole purpose in life is to empower other woman.

Take novelist Terry McMillan, for example.

Oh, wait.

Nothing says “girl power” like recommending that you go and break out the oatmeal and raisins, right?

Many of you may be asking, “Who the heck is Terry McMillan?”

She is a very well educated woman who has written blockbuster novels that turned into movies such as Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. She is a classic success story – she grew up in a poor family in Port Huron, Michigan and then made it big through hard work, education, and talent. On her Twitter account she calls herself Ms. Terry McMillan.

I always enjoyed her books, although I found them a little heavy on the revenge for my liking – I’m kind of a “let it go and let Karma deal with it” person, myself.

However, even though I don’t consider myself a conservative, but a libertarian, I am insulted as a woman by her snarky little comments. Does the fact that my child has home-baked treats in her lunch box somehow cast a shadow over my personal level of intelligence? Dear heavens, please don’t anyone tell Ms. Terry McMillan that I spent yesterday afternoon canning homemade chili! She’ll think I have no business having political opinions at all! Maybe I should stop writing immediately, remove my shoes, and hie myself off to the kitchen, clad in an apron and pearls.

Suggesting that women who have opted for a more “traditional” role are somehow lesser seems to me the very opposite of female empowerment. Having the freedom to choose to stay home with your children or to be the CEO of a company – that’s what we should all be striving for. A true “feminist”, it seems to me, would honor the choices that women make and embrace the priorities that women select. Where would our society be without the nurturers and caregivers? I would never dare to suggest that Ms. McMillan end her career and go crochet booties – so where does she get off insulting women who have different roles than she has opted for? Some of us can actually have a career, be the primary caregiver for our families, and bake cookies, and roast a chicken, all without missing a beat. Isn’t the ability to let go of those little pigeonholes that society would fit us into and just be ourselves and pursue the lives we want to lead real feminine power?

I find it unfortunate that someone with a platform to reach so many people is so scathing and derogatory towards those with different philosophies in life. It is sad that this woman who puts herself forth as a spokesperson for women wants to demean other women. It’s rather antithetical to her recent Facebook status that said:

Teach your children to be polite. By way of example. – October 21, 2013

Oh, dear.

Whether you are conservative, liberal, or libertarian in philosophy, degrading others is probably not the best way to get your point across. You really don’t require my analysis on this one. The attacks of this novelist, who somehow feels uniquely qualified to share her political views and influence her 229,583 followers will tell you all you need to know. The philosophy for some, when they can’t form an actual argument, is to insult and degrade to distract from the topic at hand. We can really let Ms. Terry McMillan speak for herself. She’s a woman of words, after all.

And finally...

It does say it all, doesn't it? I'd write more, but I have to go get my cookies out of the oven before they burn.

  • I am probably not the “right” person, meaning not politically correct, to comment on this post, but I am sailing into the deep blue nevertheless.

I have not heard of this author before, but I am sorry to say that she is not an independent thinker. She may think she is, but repeating the same Marxist rhetoric since its arrival in NYC in 1933, is not original. Verbally assaulting another position is usually the last ditch tactic of the less intellectual. Shame on her.

“Following Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in 1933, the Institute left Germany for Geneva, before moving to New York City in 1935, where it became affiliated with Columbia University. Its journal Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung was accordingly renamed Studies in Philosophy and Social Science. It was at this moment that much of its important work began to emerge, having gained a favorable reception within American and English academia.” (Wikipedia)

(In reality, Marxism/socialism has been alive and well in history since the beginning of time. It was just under different names.)

The Institute in reference is now referred to as “The Frankfurt School.” Over time, academia has become rabid pro-Marxist in its position, or socialist at the very least. Today, those who are considered “well educated” or academically “intelligent,” almost always takes this position. Anyone taking a more conservative approach is black balled. The idea of education being a forum for discussion and exploration of academic philosophical positions has been dead very quite some time. Not only have I read the writings from feminists who have taken this position, I know several female professors, with whom I come in contact somewhat frequently, from well known respected academic institutions. They all sing the same song.

Apparently Ms McMillan and I had different experiences during the 1950’s. While some aspects of that decade would best be forgotten, there was much that made those years good years. The end of that decade was the end of the era in which God was at least respected. Despite the thin veneer covering the societal rot, the society at large at least respected most levels of morality instead of blatantly displaying it. That veneer was removed during the decade of the 60’s and ushered in the era of the debased society that we now live in.

She is not original in bashing the Bible. I doubt she has ever read the book. If she wishes to refute its use and belief, she should read it in its entirety, forming her own opinion based on academic research and not what she has been told.

I do not take any political position, but I am not a liberal by any means. While I did hold a full time job as an educator when my children were young, my children were my first priority. This alone would cause Ms. McMillan’s blood pressure to rise. The result is that my six children are professionals, and accountant, two nurses, food science, optometrist, and teacher, well educated, and all have a good moral compass. They are happily married, hard workers, and have strong family values.

  • Just because you are book smart doesnt mean you are smart or have common sense. This woman couldnt find her butt with both hands in the real world hence the tweets about all the conservatives. in the real world most people deal with real numbers, not so in the liberal world, its all just numbers on a page. She seems to have forgotten how she did anything before the glamour showed up ie hard work, self reliance, and a host of other fine qualities that most people have! it also seems that her fame has faded a bit so here comes the tweets just to say im still alive and relevant.

  • When the SHTF us “baking cookie” moms will be far better prepared than the one’s who just run their big mouths!! I will take the values of working hard and being self reliant over someone that just enjoys blabbering non-sense. Always a leftist ploy to deflect the negative qualities they hold and pick on someone with all their “chocolate chips” in their cookies! 😛 Standing by munching away on my home baked Non-GMO cookies..

  • I love women who bake more cookies.
I hate women who don’t know how to bake cookies!
    Signed: Cookies Monster

  • Ms McMillan is falling right into the “divide and conquer” strategy that “they” have laid out. While the country is being looted, she is looking the other way.

“It’s not left versus right…it’s you versus the state.”
    Ludwig von Mises

  • People like this have always been around. But in USA, they finally have power and lots of it. They have power and money. They now write the Laws and etc. Times have changed. Hopefully, we all wake up before it is too late.

But then again, millions of Americans agree and like this agenda.

  • In the words of Gretchen Wilson…
”I’ll stand there puttin in my own front yard with a baby on my hip”

  • Years ago, I worked for a vey smart woman who attempted to explain women like ms McMillan, and feminists who make our own worst enemies. Will admit it took some time and exposure for me to ‘get it’. Now that I have, I feel a duty to expose and call them out for what they are. A comment above used the term, divide and conquer, and she is absolutely correct! These hypocrites will be our downfall, but only if we allow it!
I intend to follow her, and her twitter, etc, and respond to her as fast as she throws it out there. Ladies, I suggest you do the same. Don’t just ‘follow’ those you like and agree with, follow those you vehemently disagree with as well, you will be amazed at what you learn. Think about it, it’s been a military, political, and PR strategy for forever. You always want to know what the other people are up to, and immediately distract, throw them off, disagree, present a dissenting viewpoint and basically cause as much chaos as possible, as quickly as possible. Before any opinion or action gets any traction, shut it down! These people do not live in the real world like we do, they live by Facebook and twitter comments to justify their thinking. They go by the thought that those type of sites, which are in actuality a minority of the public, are the majority of people out there. Most of us are busy taking care of families and our own business. These kinda people are the ones who want to tell us what to do, are getting away with because we let them. It’s time to put a stop to it! Get on their bandwagons and be a squeaky wheel!

  • A liberal has not had a new idea since the Johnson Administration and `The Great Society` plan.

Anyone know of a Liberal Cookie Recipe? 🙂

  • Terry McMillan {I refuse to call her MS. because feminists don’t deserve any respect] can continue being a misguided fool all she wants. That is her choice. But she does NOT speak for any other women out here. In fact, she is totally out of touch with reality. It is feminism which has divided men and women since the 70s with the brainwashing it has don to women’s minds. It has made the problems between men and women more difficult, if not impossible, to solve. I’ve never seen anything positive about the influence feminism has had on the minds of women. it has been devastating to both women and men. Before feminism, there were fewer problems between men and women and those problems were easier to solve. Nowadays, it semmingly takes nothing less than a miracle to solve any outstanding issue between a man and woman. Feminism must never be allowed to dominate American society. I can just imagine what could happen in such a scenario. Daisy, I normally enjoy your articles and have never disagreed with anything in them. there’s only one thing in this article I have to take issue with. You stated McMillan was well-educated? No, she is not because she believes in feminism! otherwise, another great article.

  • Interesting article…. Us girls who became women post feminist revolution are in a most interesting position…. to have that freedom of choice and tend to feel damned no matter which choice they may make. Finding the balance is the true need of any person, man or woman. We are blessed to be able to choose whether or not we want to work full time, or tend our homes and families full time, but society expects us to do both perfectly. that’s where the damned if you do damned if you don’t comes into play. I work full time, at the same time building my own business, while raising three kids, and a husband, yet feel myself wishing most of the time i had more time to bake cookies and homeschool my children….Perfecting the balance of doing all things well rather than perfectly is my daily goal.

Demeaning another for not making the same choices as myself is never in my agenda. Most kind hearted folks would say the same. Some people will just let the power of influence go to their head.

Never forget the rockafeller et.al. involvement in the femme. rev. with the hopes of more taxable wages, and state raised zombie children…. Either way, such mean rantings of anyone may just not be worth noting, or wasting time with if it weren’t for the fact that so many people may hang off her every word.

  • These comments are no different, if not worse than, the one Ms. McMillian made. Yes, I call her Ms. Mcmillian. I’ve read her books and follewed her career. Only ignorant people speak on subjects they are not familiar with. Majority of the posts are bashing her. Look in the mirror, and check yourself. Many of you don’t seem to be much better than the person you claim she’s not. She’s a talented writer. Try reading a book.
