Chocolate milk is just so darned good. However, if you read the labels at the grocery store, you might think you need a chemistry degree to make it! Artificial flavors, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners and unpronounceable items that are NOT found in nature outstrip the basics of chocolate and milk.
The kind you purchase already premixed in a carton is laden with high fructose corn syrup and a host of other nasty ingredients.
Milk, Corn Syrup High Fructose, Calcium Carbonate, Cocoa, Potassium Citrate, Sugar,Carrageenan, Guar Gum, Salt, Flavor(s) Natural & Artificial
Plus, at least in my small town, it’s only sold in conventional form. We are strictly organic with dairy products because of the hormones. So what about the bottles of chocolate syrup to make our own? It’s awful too!!!!! Here are the ingredients in storebought chocolate syrup:
Sugar, Water, Cocoa Processed With Alkali, Salt, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate Preservative,Flavor(s) Artificial, Xanthan Gum, Caramel Color, Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 6
Notice that in the syrup, there’s more sugar in it than water? Further, there are all sorts of preservatives – and what’s with the artificial color? Since when did chocolate not look chocolatey enough? Homemade chocolate milk is a slightly lighter color than the artificially coloured stuff, which just confirms that your drinking dye with the storebought syrup.
I’m here to tell you – chocolate milk does NOT require all these chemicals. Making your own is inexpensive, simple, and far healthier!
To make a glass of delicious chocolate milk, you only need 3 ingredients:
- 1 tbsp of sugar (we use an organic muscovado sugar for a deep rich flavor)
- 1 tsp of baker’s cocoa
- Milk
Pour about 1/2 inch of hot water into the bottom of a glass. This doesn’t have to be boiling hot. If your tap water is safe to drink, this is sufficiently hot for your purpose.
Spoon in the cocoa and sugar and stir thoroughly with a fork until the dry ingredients are well dissolved.
Top your homemade puddle of syrup with cold milk.
Hi Daisy. Your recipe was what I grew up on. I was an adult before I saw either the powdered mix or the syrup. The very best was Neilson’s cocoa. I don’t if it was just a Canadian Co. or not but it was so good. Can only find it once in a blue moon today. That recipe is no harder to make than the ready mades & not the extra alphabets added.
Hi Daisy:
